Address Verification Service (AVS)

A fraud prevention tool that verifies billing address information with the card issuer.

What is Address Verification Service (AVS)?

Address Verification Service (AVS) is a fraud prevention tool that checks if the billing address provided by the customer matches the address on file with the card issuer. For each transaction, AVS returns a code indicating match status: full match, partial match (ZIP only, street only), or no match. Merchants can configure their systems to accept, review, or decline transactions based on AVS results. AVS is primarily used in the US, Canada, and UK.

Why It Matters

AVS is a basic but effective fraud prevention layer for card-not-present transactions. Using customer-entered address against issuer records helps identify potentially fraudulent transactions without adding customer friction. However, AVS isn't foolproof—fraudsters may have address information, and legitimate customers may have address mismatches (new address, typos). It's best used alongside other fraud tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. Some legitimate transactions have mismatches (apartments, new addresses, typos). Use AVS as one signal among many. Consider partial matches and other fraud indicators.

AVS works primarily in the US, Canada, and UK. Many international issuers don't support AVS, so you'll get "unavailable" responses for foreign cards.

AVS is typically included in standard processing. It's an automated check that happens with each transaction at no additional per-transaction fee.
