3D Secure

An authentication protocol that adds a verification step for online card payments.

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure (3DS) is an authentication protocol that adds an extra verification step during online checkout. The customer is prompted to authenticate via their bank—typically through a one-time code, app notification, or biometric. Originally branded as "Verified by Visa" and "Mastercard SecureCode," 3D Secure 2.0 (3DS2) enables smoother authentication with risk-based decisions, allowing low-risk transactions to pass without friction while adding verification for high-risk ones.

Why It Matters

3D Secure provides liability shift for fraud—if a 3DS-authenticated transaction results in fraud, liability shifts from merchant to issuer. This protection is valuable for card-not-present merchants facing chargeback risk. However, poorly implemented 3DS can increase cart abandonment. 3DS2 balances security with user experience through intelligent, risk-based authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It provides liability shift for fraud, but customers can still dispute for other reasons (product not received, not as described). It doesn't prevent friendly fraud.

3DS2 minimizes friction with risk-based authentication. Low-risk transactions pass without challenge. Studies show 3DS2 impact on conversion is minimal compared to reduced fraud.

Required in Europe (SCA regulation) for most transactions. Optional in the US but recommended for high-risk merchants or transactions. Some issuers require it globally.
